Introduction of the Technique (video)

Reasoned technique of the Guitar based on the Independence of the Thumbs and the Ergonomic Neck

The Background and the perspectives of the Ergonomic Guitar.

Frankue Martínez: author

My experience as a teacher showed me that even though the student understood the necessary muscle action, some of the guitar techniques were extremely difficult to learn.

After 15 years of personal researching, trying different techniques and going deeply into the proposal from professor and solo guitarist D. Abel Carlevaro, I found out that liberation of the thumb of the left hand became unviable because of the following reasons:

  • The guitar neck design, which leaded to an unfavourable left hand position, causing the “pincer” effect between the thumb and the rest of the fingers.
  • The lack of specific muscle resources that allow 1-2-3-4 fingers to act fluently.

With all these, I designed an ergonomic neck for the guitar and a series of gadgets called “facilitators”, with the purpose of helping the achievement of correct muscle habits.

Essentially, I was looking for a technique that allowed the free action of thumbs.

However, this personal finding needed a more objective study to value its effectiveness

In year 2003, at the University of La Laguna, an investigation team was created to lead a project financed by the Goverment of the Canary Islands. The conclusions of this investigation, were presented at the International Conference ISME ( International Society for Music Education ) 2004, reflecting that the new guitar technique contributed clear benefits to the educational field.

Nowadays we are organizing different activities to spread the new technique and we are also trying other advances for its use.

We recommend that you watch the enclosed video and we thank you in advance for the questions or contributions that you send us, all with the intention of favouring the passionate world of the guitar.

How to learn the new technique.

The new technique can be developed either with beginning or advanced levels. In this last case we need to review some habits to apply the new way.

To learn the technique we need to do some exercises with the help of the “facilitators” and the ergonomic neck. For the use of these materials, we need specialized advice so we can achieve our goals.

Nevertheless, just as an orientation, I enclosed two exercises.

To develop the new technique, it is necessary to attend lessons. For more information you can contact me: israelma@auna.com.

Illustrated example of the left hand exercise.

This exercise helps the autonomy of the movement of fingers 1-2-3-4, articulating from the knuckles and without the participation of the thumb as a pincer. For this we have to be aware that this finger has a totally passive involvement.(watch the video)p>

Illustrated video.

The final results of the investigation showed a clear improvement in the learning process of the guitar.

In the video we enclose images of two students so that you can appreciate the rhythmic precision, coordination and fluency of their hands. This was achieved after eight lessons and without any previous knowledge.
